The Beginning Of The Story
Frederick Lawson-Brown first delved into the world of Golf on a holiday in Bridlington whilst watching the Yorkshire Amateur Golf Championship at Ganton Golf Club. After enlisting the help of other associates, the team if four went on to seek land suitable for a golf course similar to that of Ganton in Leeds.
The Opening Of The Club
After F J tuner send 100 invitations to gather a list of 100 members, Moortown Golf club opened its doors in 1909. However the official opening was highlighted on 24th September 1910 with a match between Open Champion James Braid and Harry Vardon, two legends of the golfing world, the perfect way to open the club!Since then the present clubhouse was opened in 1915 and the club has hosted a lot of famous faces including the England and Australian Cricket teams who often took a break from the ashes for a round of golf at Moortown.
The Ryder Cup
One of the most momentous events to take place at Moortown Golf Club has to be the Ryder Cup in 1929. As the first European club to host the Ryder Cup, months of preparation were put into Moortown’s club to ensure its perfect condition for the competition, and that it was!The Match drew in the largest crowd ever seen at a UK golf tournament with over 15,000 present to watch Duncans victory over Hagen by 10 and 8.
