Previously Wortley was home to smaller industrial works, however the proximity to industrial centres such as Armley and Holbeck encouraged gradual growth in the area. Wortley was recognised for its array of railway junctions and multiple gasworks across Lower and New Wortley. Wortley changed drastically after the Second World War, when Leeds Corporation and private developers, redeveloped the Victoria slums and created a range of social housing.
