Things To Do

Starting with a popular family favourite is Woodlesford lock, a great place to spot a host of wildlife and old barges, making a lovely backdrop to enjoy a picnic or dog walk. Follow the towpath and you will arrive at Rothwell Country Park with more countryside walks and a lovely place for quiet recreation. Why not take a trip out to a museum? With many close by, the Thwaite Water Mill is only a 20 minute drive or you could visit the Thackray Medical Museum which again is only a 20 minute car journey! If you would prefer a gentle stroll around a town centre stopping for a coffee (or something stronger), Rothwell town centre is only 3 minutes from Woodlesford and has plenty to do, including a number of shops, local cafes and attractions near by.

Things you didn't know about Woodlesford

Originally Woodlesford was separated from the neighbouring village of Oulton but this is no longer the case due to the residential expansion of both villages. The official boundary between the two villages runs through the centre of the Midland Hotel public house, along Midland Street and then across to Holmsley Field Lane.

Schools in Woodlesford

There is one primary school and a nursery in Woodlesford. The nearest secondary school is Royds Academy in Rothwell, others commute to either Brigshaw High School or The Rodillian Academy in Garforth.

Transport

Woodlesford Railway Station to the North-East of the village provides trains to Leeds, Barnsley, Sheffield and Goole from which services link to major cities throughout the country. In the summer the Scarborough Spa Express train operates to Scarborough on alternate Thursdays, calling at Woodlesford train station! Various busses also run through Woodlesford going directly to Leeds, Castleford, Seacroft, Wakefield and Pontefract.

History

The village was the home of Bentley's Yorkshire Bitter but after the brewery was acquired by Whitbread plc in 1968 beer production ceased in 1972. The brewery premises served as a distribution centre until 1983. The Bentley family started the brewery in 1828. They also built Eshald Mansion and were major benefactors of All Saints Church. The church opened in 1870 and closed in the 1990s. It has since been redeveloped as a house and Eshald Mansion divided into flats.

Eating & Drinking

Woodlesford is home to some lovely pubs. The Midland hotel is a village favourite offering a warm and cosy atmosphere and serving classic pub favorites, they also have a great outside space for those warmer days and offer free WIFI! If you are passing through or having visitors who need accommodation, the Midlands Hotel has a range of rooms available. The Two Pointers is also a popular dog friendly pub, serving food and a variety of beverages. For those who enjoy a great coffee, the Midland Coffee Shop forming part of the hotel can be found in the village centre, serving a variety of hot drinks plus delicious sweet treats!

Shopping

The village has a couple of local shops for necessities including a Londis and Co-op. For a larger variety of shops and supermarkets, Rothwell town is only a 3 minute drive and has plenty of shops including a large Morrisons. Just a 15-minute drive away in Castleford is Junction 32 shopping complex, where many well-known clothes shops and restaurants can be found!
