There is plenty to do in and around Headingley, catch local or international rugby and cricket matches at the impressive Headingley Stadium; home to The Yorkshire Country Cricket Club, The Leeds Rhinos and Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Union. If you prefer Spielberg over sport, Headingleys Cottage Road Cinema is one of the oldest cinemas in the country. Opening its doors in 1912, the cinema still boasts many of its original characteristic features. The Leeds Beckett Headingley Campus is far more than your standard university building. The university itself is surrounded by greenery fit for a picnic, afternoon in the sun or and escape from the library. Whether you’re a student, resident or just passing through its definitely worth a visit.

Transport

Considering the close proximity to the Leeds City Centre, transport from Headingley is both efficient and regular, with frequent bus routes connecting to the city centre in less than 20 minutes. Headingleys train station also offers links to Leeds, Harrogate and York. Headingley is also conveniently located with good access to the M62, M6 and M1 for those traveling further afield.

    History

    As far as records show, Headingley was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 as ‘Hedingelei or Hedingeleia’ described as around 840 acres of land. During the Industrial Revolution,  as a result of becoming home to the rich in an effort to avoid the pollution for the city Headingley expanded to become more like the Headingley we know and love today.

    Eating & Drinking

    Headingley isn’t short of places to eat, everything from Thai to kebabs, to suit its vast range of residents. Jinos Thai Café is a firm favourite, their authentic Thai cuisine combined with the cosy and friendly atmosphere, makes Jinos a winning spot. The Headingley veteran Salvos are famous for serving innovative Italian food in a relaxed atmosphere, making them a go to since 1976. When looking for places to drink, you won’t be short of options in Headingley. For a relaxed evening filled with local craft beers and shuffleboard, The Head of Steam is a must visit, but if you’re warming up for a night in Leeds, The Box offers great music, atmosphere and cocktails. Finally when the sun is shining, there is no better place to soak up the rays than the impressive beer garden of The Original Oak.

    You won’t be short of places to shop in Headingley, with such a vast population it’s no surprise there are a number of high street retailers including, Sainsbury’s, Wilko’s and Superdrug on Headingley’s main parade of shops. Headingley is also home to a number of independent retailers including Katie & May, alongside an extraordinary amount of charity shops, that prove popular with students looking for those vintage buys.
