Things To Do

There are a number of things to do in and around the Meanwood area. Meanwood Valley trail is well known with the locals, for its stunning woodland walks, which beam with beautiful nature, perfect for walking the dog, biking or taking the family on that Sunday stroll. Take the kids for a ride on the donkeys at Hope Pastures, meet the Shetland ponies or even learn how to look after them, either way it’s an unforgettable day out for you and the family. If it’s a picnic in the park on a summer’s day, Meanwood Park is a busy little park, that’s great for a clamber on the climber frames or even a match or two on the tennis courts. A little further afield are: Roundhay, Oakwood, Headingley and Horsforth which have an abundance of sports clubs, parks and day and night activities sure to always keep you entertained.

It is believed that John Atkinson Grimshaw, famous Victorian painter, did some of his most well-known fairy paintings in Meanwood Park, in the 18th century.

Transport

Situated just 3.5 miles from Leeds city centre and 1.1 miles from Headingley, Meanwood is an excellent choice for a commuter. With easy access to motorway links, ring road and surrounding areas, Meanwood is an ideal location. Buses are the main mode of transport with the options of local taxis. Although there is no train station in Meanwood, 2.1 miles away is Headingley train station, which offers direct routes to nearby cities and towns, ideal for travelling further afield.

    History

    Tunnel How Hill, was reputed the highest point in Leeds and is located just North of Stonegate Road. A folly in the form of a ruined castle stood there until 1946 and was dedicated to King Alfred, which some streets adjacent to the hill are now named after him.

Popular amongst the locals for its Sunday dinner and great ale, is The Hungry Bear, where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a cold one with your friends. Alternatively, indulge in Italian tapas at Zucco, with a glass of wine or two whilst soaking up the true authentic atmosphere. Talking about tapas, why not head to the Myrtle Tavern for some British tapas style dishes, or just head for a cold pint in their famous beer garden, you won’t be disappointed either way. Fancy something on the sofa? There are fish and chip shops, Chinese takeaways, pizza and curry; you name it Meanwood has it. Did someone say cocktails? Alfred, Junction, Boot and Rally and East Arcadia all serve an array of unique drinks and cocktails, perfect for a date night.

    Meanwood has everything you need right on your doorstep; the list of amenities is truly endless. With big superstores Waitrose and Aldi, within walking distance of the centre, you will never be short of the necessities. There is also a barber, hairdresser, beauty salon and even a gym, to keep yourself fit and looking great. However, if you are wanting some high street shops, Leeds city centre and Headingley can offer these for just a short drive away.
